A type of warship, mainly in the latter half of the 19th century. Characterized by their iron armor (although later ones have steel armor, or some composite of the two) and use of coal powered steam power (although many earlier ones also kept sails for back up or fuel saving reasons). HMS Warrior often considered to the first true ironclad. Era ended by the late 19th century as all the old wooden Man-of-war finally went out of service and they themselves were supersede by Predreadnoughts, the Royal Sovereign class often cited to mark the end of the ironclad era.
