An immensely popular Japanese RPG series developed by [[Square Enix]]—formerly by Enix separately—with character designs by [[Toriyama Akira]]. The series—especially the earliest games—heavily influenced the development of the genre in Japan. The series was never as popular in the west as [i][[Final Fantasy]][/i] due to delayed releases and the closure of Enix's North America office in the 1990s, but its profile has grown since the 2003 Square Enix merger.
