The fifth and so far last game in the main [i][[Gensou Suikoden]][/i] series, taking place 143 years after [i][[Gensou Suikoden IV]][/i] and 7 years prior to [i][[Gensou Suikoden I]][/i], in the Queendom of Falena (to the south of [i]Gensou Suikoden IV[/i]'s Island Nations). It follows [[Freyjadour Falenas]], the prince of Falena, as he leads a rebellion against the usurpers who overthrew his mother. Unlike every other game of the series, Freyjadour does not become the host of a True Rune. Perhaps in response to the mixed reaction to [i][[Gensou Suikoden III]][/i] and generally negative reaction to [i]Gensou Suikoden IV[/i], [i]Gensou Suikoden V[/i] hearkens back heavily to [i][[Gensou Suikoden II]][/i], which is widely regarded as the high point of the series. Many [i]Gensou Suikoden II[/i] characters appear or are alluded to in [i]Gensou Suikoden V[/i], and the gameplay eliminates most of the changes introduced in later games in favor of an upgraded version of [i]Gensou Suikoden II[/i]'s battle system. This effort to restore fans' faith in the series seems to have worked, as [i]Gensou Suikoden V[/i] is generally regarded as the second best of the series, with many even ranking it as the best.
