Wiki History Listing

V1 A romance horror puzzle platformer game released on February 17, 2011 for PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360. Character designs are drawn by [[Soejima_Shigenori]] and Meguro Shoji composes the original music. The anime cutscenes are animated by Studio 4°C. The character Catherine is tagged as [[catherine]].

It tells the story of Vincent Brooks, a man who is at a crossroads in his life. He is in a relationship with his high school sweetheart Katherine McBride who has begun talking about marriage. Although he cares about her, he is uncertain about whether he's ready to take their relationship to the next level, and he discusses his concerns with his friends at the local bar. Later that night, a beautiful and flirtatious blonde woman named Catherine approaches him and flirts with him. He has a strange and terrifying nightmare where he's pursued by something that wants to kill him.

When he wakes up the next morning, he discovers Catherine is in bed with him and she has taken a liking to him. Vincent fears the worst has happened and becomes fearful of what will happen if Katherine discovers Catherine. To make things worse, Vincent continues to have nightmares where he, along with some sheep men, are being chased by mysterious beings out for their blood up towers of blocks. At the same time, there have been a series of mysterious deaths in the city; all of them are men Vincent's age. . .

The game is very story driven and has numerous anime like cutscenes. Vincent is playable whenever he's at the bar where he can talk to his friends and other NPCs and when Vincent is dreaming. These dream segments are puzzle platformers generally accompanied by classical music where Vincent must climb up a tower of blocks and reach the top before whatever's chasing him catches up to him and kills him. The game also features multiple endings which are determined by how Vincent responds to a set of questions. Besides the main story mode, the game also features multiplayer modes where 2 players can compete with each other to reach the top of their tower first. Said multiplayer caught the interest of pro players and the game was featured as a side event at EVO 2015 despite not being a fighting game.

The game is infamously difficult even by Atlus standards. When it first came out, the game was considered so hard by players that Atlus had to patch in an easy mode so players can have a chance.

The game was financially and critically successful, selling 500,000 copies by the end of 2011. The game received a remaster called Catherine: Full Body, which adds new endings and a third female lead. It also allows the player to choose which voice actress they want to hear as Catherine, who is now played by 10 other voice actresses besides the original Sawashiro Miyuki.

Catherine and Katherine are spelled the same way in Japanese giving the game's title multiple meanings, and are also pronounced the same way in English. The remaster continues this trend with its third female lead, named Rin which short for Qatherine.

The game's racy cover art is often a source of parody with other characters from other series standing in for Catherine and Vincent. Such parodies are tagged [[catherine_cover_parody]].
